Lawnside, 1926: A 100 Year Old Borough

Lawnside, 1926: A 100 Year Old Borough is a digital project that visualizes the town of Lawnside, New Jersey as it was a century ago.

The Borough of Lawnside is a historically Black town located in Camden County that has been an integral part of the African African culture in South Jersey. Originally known as Snow Hill and part of the larger Centre Township, this town was home to one of the first Black communities in New Jersey. Though the original community dates back to the 18th century and grew into a center of African American life throughout the 19th century, it was only in 1926 that the town was officially incorporated as Lawnside.

This project maps the town as it was at the time of its incorporation by focusing on: 1) An overview of the town and its people, 2) houses that are over a century old.
