This project visualizes the burial sites of Civil War veterans buried in Lawnside, New Jersey. This town has three main graveyards Mt. Pisgah, Mt. Peace, and Mt. Zion, all of which have many Civil War soliders buried in their graveyards. Throughout Lawnside's history it was a town predominately of African American citizens. The town's cemeteries were popular burial sites for former civil war soldiers in the South Jersey region who had served in the "colored" infantry units. These units were all located outside of New Jersey.
All of the graveyards are kept alive due to the organizations that help run them and shed light on the history of the African American community in New Jersey that give the public deeper insight. Our project is built upon the work from the Lawnside Historical Society and Shamele Jordan. They all have collected data and preserved the cemeteries for decades helping keep these locations known and not forgotten in the public eye. Our project hopes to continue this spirit by visualizing these soldiers and their burials in geographic space to give a new perspective on these locations.
